Don’t let Temporomandibular Joint Disorder or Tinnitus disrupt your life any longer.

The temporomandibular joint is a hinge which connects the jaw to the temporal bones of the skull. It is located in front of each ear and it is what allows a person to move their jaw up and down and from side to side, so that they can talk, chew, and yawn. Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, or is it as more commonly known as TMJ or TMD, is the pain in that jaw joint and the surrounding muscles. It also causes limited movement in those areas.

Some of the causes of TMJ include injury to the jaw or the muscles of the head or neck. Someone may get an injury of this sort from whiplash or another sort of heavy blow. Movement of the soft cushion or the disc between the ball and socket of the joint or the grinding and clenching of one’s teeth puts a lot of pressure on the jaw joint. Stress can be another common factor that causes some people to get TMJ because people often tend to tighten their facial and jaw muscles or clench their teeth when they are under a lot of pressure. Arthritis in the joint can also cause TMJ.

A person suffering from TMJ usually experiences pain, or discomfort and difficulty in the jaw while chewing, and a clicking and locking of the jaw joint. They may hear a clicking or popping sounds in the jaw joint while chewing or while trying to open and close their mouth. The pain is not limited to a person’s jaw joint, they may also experience pain or tenderness on their face, around their ear while chewing, and in their neck and shoulders. They may also experience swelling or tired feeling in their face. TMJ can also cause toothaches, headaches, earaches, hearing problems and tinnitus.

Tinnitus is the ringing, buzzing or other similar sounds one hears in their ears. It is a very common sensation and it is estimated that it affects about 50 to 60 million people in the United States. Hearing loss is often associated with tinnitus but it does not cause tinnitus nor does tinnitus cause hearing loss. The ringing sound a person with tinnitus hears is usually caused by damage from tiny hairs in the inner ear.

Tinnitus can eventually interfere with someone’s personal life and work and can even result in psychological distress. It can also cause difficulty with concentrating and having a good night’s sleep. It is important to note that tinnitus is not a disease, but it is the symptom of another health problem, one of those being TMJ.

Do not let TMJ or tinnitus interfere with your personal life and your ability to obtain a good night’s sleep. An adequate amount of sleep is a crucial part of leading a healthy lifestyle.
