What is a sleep test?

A sleep test is a diagnostic procedure used to identify and diagnose sleep disorders. There are different types of sleep studies, including attended sleep studies and at-home sleep studies.

An attended sleep study, also known as a polysomnogram, is a diagnostic procedure conducted in a laboratory to assess a person’s sleep patterns and detect potential sleep disorders. During an attended sleep study, you stay overnight at a sleep lab in a specialized sleep room equipped with monitoring equipment. Please note, Koala Center do not provide attended sleep studies. However, if you require one, we will work with a local lab for the procedure and discuss the findings with you afterward. Some comorbid health conditions require an attended sleep study.

At certain Koala Center, we offer convenient and accessible home sleep studies using SleepImage technology. With our at-home sleep studies, you can undergo a comprehensive evaluation of your sleep patterns and potential sleep disorders from the comfort of your own home.

SleepImage is an innovative technology that utilizes a thin, wireless sensor to monitor your sleep quality and breathing patterns. This non-invasive sensor is worn comfortably on your finger. It collects data while you sleep, providing valuable insights into your sleep health. After your home sleep test, your data will be easily and securely uploaded to your physician’s cloud-based platform. Our sleep specialists will analyze the data and provide you with a detailed report, along with personalized recommendations for improving your sleep quality at your follow-up visit.

What to expect during an at-home sleep test?

For your sleep test, you can expect a seamless and user-friendly experience that provides valuable insights into your sleep quality. The general process is as follows:

Easy setup – SleepImage is designed to be user-friendly. Bring your cell phone or tablet to the office when you are scheduled to pick up your at-home sleep test. Our team will assist you in downloading the SleepImage app to your cell phone or tablet and syncing the ring device. We will go over how to prepare for your sleep study and ensure you are ready for the test at home

Comfortable sleep – Once the equipment is set up, you can sleep in your own bed, ensuring a comfortable and familiar sleep environment. The monitoring device will measure your sleep parameters, such as heart rate, breathing, and body movement, without causing any disturbance.

Data collection – Throughout the night, the SleepImage technology will collect detailed data about your sleep patterns. After the data collection is completed, you can easily forward this information to the doctor using the app.

Comprehensive follow-up – After the sleep test, you will have the opportunity to discuss the results provided by a board-certified physician. They will interpret the data, explain the findings, provide a diagnosis if applicable, and recommend appropriate treatment options to improve your sleep quality.

How do you know if you need a sleep test?

If you’re wondering whether you need a sleep test, there are a few signs and symptoms to watch out for that may indicate the need for further evaluation. If you often experience excessive daytime sleepiness, loud snoring, morning headaches, or frequent awakenings during the night, it could be a sign of an underlying sleep disorder. Other potential indicators include difficulty falling asleep, restless leg movements, or gasping or choking sensations during sleep.

It’s all about getting to the bottom of any underlying sleep disorders and finding the best treatment options to improve your sleep and, in turn, your quality of life.
