Simple Device Could Solve your Child’s Attention Issues
According to statistics from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the number of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) diagnoses in the United States has jumped by over 40 percent since the early 2000s. This jump brings the total number of American children with ADHD to around 6 million. The symptoms of ADHD in children vary and include a number of issues with focus and hyperactivity. For example, according to ADDitude Magazine, a periodical for those with attention disorders, these symptoms include difficulty paying attention, completing tasks and sitting still, among others. While symptoms can often be managed through lifestyle changes and medications, there is no known cure.
However, one company is working to change that. The Koala® Center For Sleep & TMJ Disorders has adopted the Healthy Start Program to provide a non-invasive natural treatment plan to address the root causes of Sleep Disordered Breathing. Dr. Rod Willey, founder of Koala® Center For Sleep & TMJ Disorders, believes the key to resolving attention disorders for some children might be better sleep. “Keep any child up late into the night and they will have behavior problems the following day. Many times, getting the proper sleep will reduce symptoms that mimic ADHD,” says Dr. Willey.
So, what is sleep disordered breathing (SDB)? The term refers to a spectrum of breathing problems that occur during sleep and that often affect the upper airway. These problems include snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Healthy Start argues that 9 out of 10 children suffer from at least some of the symptoms of SDB, such as mouth breathing, snoring, teeth grinding, swollen tonsils and adenoids, bedwetting, and restless sleep. And when children aren’t sleeping well, they often show symptoms indistinguishable from those of ADHD. Without the right quality and quantity of sleep, children lack focus, show signs of hyperactivity, and have difficulty finishing assignments or other tasks. When Koala® Center For Sleep & TMJ Disorders doctors evaluate a child, they look at the child’s airway. If it is compromised and the child isn’t breathing well or swallowing properly, they can address these problems through their patented orthodontic/orthopedic appliances.
These appliances are non-pharmaceutical and non-invasive. Treatment involves fitting your child with a soft, comfortable appliance, similar to a mouth guard, that is generally worn at night. The appliance helps to develop the airway and hold it open during sleep. Additionally, it will encourage proper jaw development and result in straight teeth without the need for braces down the road.
The Koala® Center For Sleep & TMJ Disorders has been treating adults with sleep disordered breathing, and now they are expanding that treatment to include children.
