At Koala® Center For Sleep & TMJ Disorders, we provide our patients with personalized care and attention, so they can overcome their sleep problems as quickly as possible and enjoy the benefits of improved sleep and increased energy. Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder, especially in men and women who are overweight, and it can not only lead to poor sleep for you and those around you, but it can also increase your chances of developing some serious health conditions including cardiovascular diseases. If you or a loved one have sleep apnea, our experienced sleep apnea doctors can help develop a non-invasive treatment solution that is tailored to your needs.

What is obstructive sleep apnea?

There are two different types of sleep apnea. Central sleep apnea (CSA) is far less common than obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and is the result of disruptions in breathing caused by neurological issues associated with other severe medical conditions. Obstructive sleep apnea is what most people are referring to when they use the term sleep apnea, and it is caused by the blockage of the natural airway during sleep. Patients with OSA have to work much harder to breathe during sleep, which can cause the loud snoring and choking noises often associated with the condition. Patients with sleep apnea are often alerted to their condition by bed partners or family members in the same house who hear the telltale sounds during the night.

Is a CPAP machine my only treatment option?

Many people have heard of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines in relation to sleep apnea treatment. While these machines can be very effective at helping to maintain an open airway, they are also inconvenient to use, difficult to maintain, and can be almost as noisy as the snoring caused by sleep apnea if they do not form a complete seal around the patient’s mouth and nose. At Koala® Center For Sleep & TMJ Disorders, we provide alternatives to CPAP machines that are comfortable and simple to use. Our oral appliance therapy has helped many patients achieve relief from their sleep apnea symptoms and improve their quality of sleep without bulky machines next to their bedside. Dental appliances created at all of our locations are made onsite to precisely match each patient’s individual anatomy, making them as comfortable and effective as possible.

What else can I do to improve my condition?

Sleep apnea is often diagnosed in overweight individuals and losing weight can often improve a person’s symptoms, as well as their overall health. It can also be useful to avoid alcohol before bedtime and sleep with your head elevated. If you choose to implement oral appliance therapy, the dental orthotic device you wear will help your airway stay open by naturally resting your jaw in an optimal position in order to allow for easy breathing throughout your sleep cycle, so you and your family can enjoy deep and restful sleep uninterrupted by loud, obtrusive snoring.
