What can I do about my sleeping problems?

It’s somewhat common for people to be tired during the day but restless at night. But just because it’s somewhat common, that doesn’t mean it’s normal. It could be that someone with this problem has insomnia or another sleep disorder. We can help here at Koala® Center For Sleep & TMJ Disorders, so if you believe you or a loved one could use our help, reach out to us today or read on to learn more about the problem and what we can do about it.

Why am I tired all day?

This is a significant problem for a person, and there is no one single solution. For some, the underlying issue could be a vitamin deficiency that vitamins or IV therapy could correct, and for others, the issue could be poor sleep due to a sleep disorder. It may be that you have an issue like REM sleep behavior disorder, narcolepsy, sleep apnea, or insomnia. There may be another factor like an issue with your jaw joint (TMJ) that could be affecting your sleep. Here at Koala® Center For Sleep & TMJ Disorders, we can help you determine why you’re tired all day. The problem needs to be addressed by professionals like ours, so contact us about it.

Why can’t I sleep at night?

Above, we mentioned insomnia. Insomnia is a sleep disorder but can also be a symptom of a sleep disorder. If you’re unable to sleep well or sometimes even at all, then it could be said that you have insomnia. You may be experiencing signs of insomnia like trouble falling asleep, waking up often at night, struggling to get back to sleep, waking up very early in the morning, feeling tired when you wake up, or even not sleeping some nights at all.

Because insomnia can be a symptom of a sleep disorder or another issue, you may need to be checked to see if you’re suffering from a condition like sleep apnea or a thyroid problem. Insomnia and its causes should be addressed by a professional too.

If you’re tired all day and not sleeping well at night, then insomnia and/or a sleep disorder or even a TMJ disorder could be the cause. A sleep study can help professionals determine what could be causing your sleep problems.

What can I do about my sleeping problems?

Remember, sleeping problems very often require professional treatment. In fact, if you ignore a sleeping problem for long, it could lead to a serious health condition like heart disease.

For insomnia, specifically, changing sleep habits can help, but if insomnia is a symptom of another problem, then treatments like behavioral therapy or sleeping pills will work better. In particular, cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) can help.

Sometimes a sleeping problem can be fixed with weight loss and lifestyle changes, while other times a problem like sleep apnea must be treated with a sleep appliance. It’s possible that CPAP therapy may work for you, but some patients find it uncomfortable and inconvenient. Here at Koala® Center For Sleep & TMJ Disorders, we prefer oral appliance therapy, and we believe you will too. This treatment is approved by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and it can work especially well for conditions like sleep apnea and TMJ disorder.
